English – Curriculum Overview

English1Aims

The overarching aim for English in the national curriculum is to promote high standards of language and literacy by equipping pupils with a strong command of the spoken and written word, and to develop their love of literature through widespread reading for enjoyment. The national curriculum for English aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • read easily, fluently and with good understanding
  • develop the habit of reading widely and often, for both pleasure and information
  • acquire a wide vocabulary, an understanding of grammar and knowledge of linguistic conventions for reading, writing and spoken language
  • appreciate our rich and varied literary heritage
  • write clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting their language and style in and for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences
  • use discussion in order to learn; they should be able to elaborate and explain clearly their understanding and ideas
  • are competent in the arts of speaking and listening, making formal presentations, demonstrating to others and participating in debate.

English2At The John Moore Primary School, we aim to ensure that our pupils are able to confidently:

  • communicate through writing and be prepared for writing tasks throughout their lives
  • undertake written work in other subjects and to have confidence in the sense, accuracy and clarity of their writing
  • express themselves through writing and develop good transcription skills

Additionally, we believe that reading is a vital skill that should be acquired as early and efficiently as    possible to enable children to have maximum access to all areas of the curriculum. We aim to develop in our pupils a love of reading that will stay with them throughout their lives. Reading skills are taught through whole class word level work, shared reading in English lessons and through guided reading sessions in ability groups. Phonics groups in KS1 and Y3 target this specific area of decoding.

Furthermore, we believe that well developed Speaking and Listening skills are crucial to a child’s development. Strong Speaking and Listening skills will enable a child to receive a good education and allow them to function as a member of society. It is our goal that our pupils are able to:

  • speak with confidence, expressing themselves using accurate vocabulary, explaining and offering a point of view
  • listen intently and follow instructions successfully whilst listening to what others say and responding appropriately to them

Phonics

We use Jolly Phonics and Letters and Sounds in our initial teaching of phonics.   Children have the opportunity to read books from the Library, from classroom collections and from our reading scheme selection.  At The John Moore Primary School we encourage children to read from a wide range of reading schemes, which are colour banded according to difficulty.
